Nail Safety FAQ
Got questions about keeping your natural nails happy while wearing press-ons? We've got you covered. Below are honest answers based on how our products actually work.
Preparation
What should I do before applying press-on nails?
Good prep is everything — it determines how long your nails last and how easily they come off. Our Prep Kit includes everything you need:
- Cuticle pusher — gently push back cuticles so the nail sits flush and adhesive bonds to the nail plate, not skin.
- Buffing stick — Buff the surface of each natural nail to create texture for better adhesion.
- Alcohol pad — wipe each nail after buffing to remove oils, dust, and any residue. This step is critical: any oil left on the nail will weaken the bond.
Allow nails to dry completely after the alcohol wipe before applying tabs or glue.
Can I apply press-ons over nail polish or gel?
No. Always apply to clean, bare natural nails. Polish or gel creates a layer that prevents a secure bond and makes removal harder.
Adhesive Choice: Glue Tabs vs. Nail Glue
What are High-hold Glue Tabs and how are they different from regular sticky tabs?
Our High-hold Glue Tabs are specifically designed for reusable press-on nails. Each sheet contains 24 tabs — enough for 2 full both-hand applications (10 tabs each), or up to 4 single-hand applications (5 tabs each). They provide a stronger hold than standard transparent sticky tabs while still allowing clean removal.
Glue tabs are gentler on natural nails during removal, making them the better choice if you apply and remove press-ons regularly.
Are the glue tabs included in the Prep Kit?
Yes — the Prep Kit includes one sheet of High-hold Glue Tabs along with the buffing stick, cuticle pusher, and alcohol pad.
Application
How do I apply the glue tabs correctly?
- Complete all prep steps (push cuticles, buff, alcohol wipe, allow to dry).
- Select the correct press-on size for each finger before opening any tabs.
- Peel a tab from the sheet and place it on your natural nail, keeping it away from the cuticle and skin.
- Press the press-on nail firmly down for 10–15 seconds, applying even pressure from centre outward.
- Avoid water for at least 1 hour after application.
Why is it important to keep tabs away from skin and cuticles?
Adhesive on skin can cause lifting at the edges, reduce wear time, and make removal more difficult. It can also cause irritation for people with sensitive skin. Always aim to bond nail to nail plate only.
Removal
How do I remove press-ons applied with glue tabs safely?
- Soak fingertips in warm (not hot) soap water for 10–15 minutes to loosen the tab adhesive.
- Gently wiggle the press-on from side to side — do not pull or force it off.
- If resistance remains, soak for a few more minutes.
- Once removed, gently push off any remaining tab residue with the cuticle pusher from your Prep Kit.
Never peel, force, or use sharp implements to pry press-ons off — this is the most common cause of natural nail damage.
Can I reuse my press-ons after removal?
Yes — SticknSlay press-ons are designed to be reusable. After removal, clean any adhesive residue from the inside of the press-on, allow them to dry, and store flat. Use a fresh glue tab for your next application.
Natural Nail Care & Breaks
Will press-on nails damage my natural nails?
When applied and removed correctly, press-on nails should not damage your natural nails. The most common causes of damage are:
- Forcing or peeling nails off instead of soaking
- Applying adhesive to skin or cuticles
- Wearing the same set for longer than recommended without a rest period
Giving your natural nails a 1–2 day break between sets helps them recover and breathe.
What if a press-on nail breaks or lifts during wear?
If a nail lifts at the edge, avoid forcing it back down — this can trap moisture underneath. Instead, remove it using the warm soak method, clean the nail, prep again, and apply a fresh tab. If it has cracked or broken, remove it fully before applying a replacement.
When to Seek Professional Advice
When should I see a professional before using press-on nails?
We recommend consulting a nail technician or dermatologist if you:
- Have damaged, peeling, or very thin natural nails
- Have a nail infection, fungal condition, or broken skin around the nails
- Experience any irritation, redness, or swelling after use
Press-on nails are not suitable for use over infected or broken nails.
